چکیده

Over years, the number of patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) in ICU has increased. Trends in the numbers of patients requiring PMV are of interest to health service planners because they consume a disproportionate amount of healthcare resources, and have high illness costs.1 PMV is defined as need of invasive mechanical ventilation for consecutive 21 days for at least 6 hours per day. With improvement in ICU care more patients survive acute respiratory failure and with that number of patients requiring PMV is likely to increase further. In a large multi centric study in United Kingdom the incidence PMV was 4.4 per 100 ICU admissions, and 6.3 per 100 ventilated ICU admissions. Also these patients used 29.1% of all general ICU bed days, had longer hospital stay after ICU discharge than non-PMV patients and had higher hospital mortality (40.3% vs 33.8%, P = 0.02).2.

The Reality of Patients Requiring Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation: A Retrospective Multicenter Cohort Study

Context: The number of patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) has increased over the last decade, generating a large population of chronically ill patients. Objective: To establish the incidence of PMV in four Intensive Care Units (ICUs), and to report different characteristics, hospital outcomes, and the impact of costs and services of PMV patients (mechanical ventilation de...

Survey of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation in Intensive Care Units in Mainland China.

INTRODUCTION In mainland China, there are no special care centers (long-term acute care, weaning, chronic care facilities) for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV). Our goal was to characterize the prevalence and outcome of patients undergoing PMV in Chinese intensive care units (ICUs). METHODS A prospective 1-d prevalence study was performed at 55 ICUs, with 28-d follow-...

Prolonged mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients: epidemiology, outcomes and modelling the potential cost consequences of establishing a regional weaning unit

INTRODUCTION The number of patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) is likely to increase. Transferring patients to specialised weaning units may improve outcomes and reduce costs. The aim of this study was to establish the incidence and outcomes of PMV in a UK administrative health care region without a dedicated weaning unit, and model the potential impact of establishing a d...

Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation After Aortic Arch Repair Requiring Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest: Incidence, Effect on Outcome, and Clinical Predictors

Objective: To delineate the incidence, outcome impact, and clinical predictors of prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) after adult aortic arch repair requiring deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (AAR-DHCA) Aims: (1) To determine the incidence of PMV after AAR–DHCA. (2) To determine whether PMV after AAR-DHCA is a multivariate predictor for mortality or length of stay in the intensive care un...
